Creative Autumn Home Décor Ideas With DIY Decorations and Seasonal Fall Crafts

Take some time to consider what kind of atmosphere you’re going for—do you want spooky or cozy? Are you hosting a fall gathering or a Halloween party? Are you looking forward to settling into a scary movie marathon surrounded by flickering candles, or do you prefer a comfy hobbit vibe with glowing lights and warm quilts?

No matter what your answers may be to those questions, get ready to enhance your home’s ambiance with these versatile DIY fall decorations and seasonal autumn crafts.

Cascading Leaves For an Autumnal Dinner

You won’t have to worry about tall centerpieces blocking your views of friends and family across the table. These beautiful fall leaf streamers create a cozy, enchanted forest ambiance to enjoy during dinner. You can gather naturally fallen leaves from a lovely autumn walk or purchase silk leaves from your local hobby store for longevity. Supplies you’ll need for five streamers include:

  • About 25 to 30 natural or silk leaves
  • A spool of fishing line
  • Wax paper
  • Painter’s tape
  • A hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

This project is fun for the entire family, but only adults should handle the hot glue. Cut five six-to-eight-inch pieces of fishing line, taping the top and bottom to a sheet of wax paper while the hot glue heats up. We recommend arranging the leaves from largest to smallest, alternating sizes, or however you and your family wish. Place a spot of glue on the back where the stem meets the base of the leaf and secure it to the fishing line.

You can tie the fishing line to a chandelier, lights, and sconces to help create the ethereal, enchanted forest atmosphere you’re looking for. Pair these streamers with flameless pillar candles, pumpkins of varying sizes, and velvet accents for an elegant Halloween gathering!

DIY Fall Wreath

Autumn wreaths are incredibly versatile objects and a wonderful way to personalize your space. Whether you want to create a spooky vampire’s castle, a cozy hobbit hole, a mystical witch’s apothecary, or a cheerful pumpkin farm, the possibilities are endless with do-it-yourself wreaths! You’ll need these supplies:

  • A wire frame, natural vine, rattan, or twig wreath
  • Spanish moss, cornhusks
  • Floral wire or hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Natural or silk fall leaves, pine cones, and seed pods
  • Stems of oat, flax, eucalyptus, broomcorn, thistle, and sea oats
  • Dried flowers like marigolds, chrysanthemums, sunflowers, celosias, statice flowers, larkspur, strawflowers, gomphrena, and ammobium
  • Ornamental corn and faux pumpkins and gourds
  • Pom-poms, ribbon, or lace

Start by lying your wire frame or natural wreath flat on a table in front of you, and then place your decorations around the frame to get an idea of where you want things positioned. You can bind together small bouquets of dried flowers with floral wire to add depth and pops of color to your wreath.

Create a base layer of Spanish moss, cornhusks, leaves, or whichever adornment you want to be the background of your wreath. Wrap or hot glue each piece to your wreath, adding layers of foliage and flowers to your liking. When you add the finishing touches of faux pumpkins, woodland creatures, or ghosts, let the glue dry for an hour—especially if there are many layers—and hang from a wreath hook!

A Family of Succulent Pumpkins and Squash

If you think creating your friends or family out of pumpkins and squash with succulents as hair screams fall—you’re right! Before we start carving eyes and mouths into plump orange pumpkins, why not try this delightful craft while enjoying the ambiance of a quiet movie or flickering candles? Supplies you’ll need for this craft include:

  • Pumpkins and squash
  • A basic set of acrylic paints
  • A fine paintbrush
  • Carving knife and scoop
  • A variety of succulents
  • Rocks and succulent dirt

Carve a hole in the top of your pumpkin or squash and scoop out the seeds—you won’t have to worry about scraping out the insides like you usually would for carving a Jack O’Lantern. Paint faces on your pumpkin or squash with the acrylic paint and let them dry for 30 to 60 minutes to prevent smearing.

Add a mixture of dirt and rocks to the pumpkin or squash, and place your succulent on top. You can add one large succulent, like an echeveria, epiphyllum, or haworthia, or numerous small trailing ones, such as sedum, crassula, or Senecio. Place your gourd family on your fireplace, mantel, or porch, and mist them lightly with water every other week to keep their roots healthy.
